A COMPLIMENTARY 90-day personal accident insurance for RM10,000, which includes cover for assault, snatch theft and accidental death, is being provided for the first 100,000 Rakan Cop members.

The coverage is being provided by American International Assurance Company, Limited (AIA Malaysia), which launched its inaugural AIA-Rakan Cop crime prevention campaign on Tuesday.

The campaign is a strategic collaboration between the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) and the police.

“Crime prevention should be in our culture and crime can be reduced by making safety a way of life,” AIA Malaysia senior vice-president and general manager Khor Hock Seng said.

He stressed that public safety and security were not the sole responsibilities of the men in blue.

“As proactive members of the local community, it is also the responsibility of large organisations to lend a hand in fighting crime.”

The snatch theft and assault risk covered by the Rakan Cop policy is not available from ordinary personal accident policies.

More than 198,000 people have signed up for the Rakan Cop programme since it was launched three years ago.

MCPF vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who was present at the launch, said police efforts alone were not enough to prevent crime.

“Crime is difficult to eliminate, it is not impossible to prevent. It needs co-operation and concerted efforts from all strata of society.

“By promoting the crime prevention initiative and making safety a way of life, we can reduce, if not eliminate, the risk of crime and the fear of crime.

“Unless one is determined to have an anti-crime culture and make safety a way of life, the fight against crime will not be effective,” Lee said.

He encouraged Malaysians to join Rakan Cop and help the police to fight crime.
