CURBING crime and improving community safety are among the top priorities of the police in ensuring residents can go about safely, Selangor CPO Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said.

He added that the police force, be it uniformed or plainclothes personnel, were making their rounds in crime-prone residential areas to weed out the bad hats.

“Keeping communities safe involves more than just preventing crime and disorder.

“We must also create a harmonious social environment that becomes a catalyst for economic growth.

“For this good environment to go on, the eight million Selangor residents must be the eyes and ears of the police,” he said.

DCP Khalid, who attended a Crime Prevention campaign jointly organised by the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation and Taman Sentosa RT Zone B and coordinated by Klang Police Headquarters, said people must take preventive measures to secure their property.

“Our community safety plan is to educate the people on simple ways to secure their homes, cars and improve personal safety.

“Most of the time, a crime takes place because an opportunity was created, for example, leaving car keys in the ignition,” he said.

Klang OCPD ACP Mohamad Mat Yusof and Taman Sentosa RT Zone B coordinator Sargit Singh were also present.

DCP Khalid said motorcycle theft and snatch thefts were prevalent in Taman Sentosa.

“We want residents to be more vigilant of their surroundings, especially in this digital age where those planning a house break-in would use camera phones to keep tabs and video stream the image to their counterparts before ransacking the house,” he said.

He also encouraged the people to become members of Rakan Cop and help channel information on crime to the police through SMS as it could help combat negative elements.
