KUALA LUMPUR: More than one million pamphlets on ways to prevent crime, including rape and burglary, will be distributed nationwide starting Saturday.
Available in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese and Tamil, the pamphlets are being given out in conjunction with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation’s (MCPF) national-level crime prevention campaign 2008 to be launched by the Prime Minister on that day.
The pamphlets are entitled “Personal Safety”, “Home Security”, “Holiday Security for Homes”, “Home Security and Safety Advice”, “Rape: No Means No”, “Crime Prevention For the Disabled”, “Ladies Safe” and “Teen and School Kids Safety”.
MCPF vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the pamphlets, with a practical checklist of safety tips, would hopefully go a long way towards preventing crime.
“If the public follows the tips, I believe crime can be reduced,” he said at a media briefing on the month-long campaign, themed Prevent Crime, Get Involved, We Can Do It Together.
“This year’s campaign is held in conjunction with the Merdeka month campaign in line with the Merdeka spirit.
“Malaysians achieved Merdeka and became free of colonisation. For this campaign we want to free Malaysians of criminals and to feel safe living in this country,” he said.
Lee added that this year’s campaign was not only longer, but was also widened to involve the relevant government agencies, local authorities and the corporate sector.
